Whether you're planning to surf our turquoise waves, explore the beaches on horseback, or just soak up the sun, packing smart is your first step to a fabulous adventure. Let’s double check your packing list for essentials and add a couple insider tips to make your trip unforgettable!
Packing Suggestions for Every Season
Lightweight Clothing: Samara's tropical climate calls for breathable, quick drying fabric. We are partial to dry-fit, wicking materials. Pack light dresses, shorts, and t-shirts.
Swimwear: This goes without saying but with our beautiful beaches and rivers you will likely get wet! We recommend bringing at least two pieces of swimwear or boardshorts that you can rotate between.
Sun Protection: The sun here can be strong, especially during our summer (December - May). We recommend bringing your favorite sunscreen from home where you will likely have more options. You can also purchase sunscreen at the local stores a few minutes walk from our center. Don’t forget lightweight hats and UV-protective sunglasses. A couple packable hats can be great options for convenience.
Comfortable, breathable footwear: Waterproof sandals for the beach can be nice BUT many people get uncomfortable blisters because they are walking around in wet water shoes for the first time. Sandals or flip flops can be great choices but try to get your feet used to whatever shoe you use before your travels if possible. Definitely pack at least 1 pair of closed toed shoes for hikes along trails or rocky shorelines.
Eco-friendly Insect Repellent: We are located in the tropics and mosquitoes can be annoying, especially during the rainy months. Costa Rica also has a version of no-see ums that come out at dusk depending on the season. Lightweight pants can also help with bug protection. Dusk and dawn are when they are most active.
Seasonal Specifics
Dry Season (December to April)
Extra Sun Gear: Extra strength sunscreen and after-sun lotion can help soothe your skin after those long beach days
Hydration: Avoid plastic bottles and bring a re-usable water bottle; staying hydrated is crucial in the dry, hot months. You can also buy little electrolyte packs before your departure.
Green Season (May to August)
Rain Gear: A Waterproof jacket or ponchos, and a travel umbrella will help you stay dry during sudden showers.
Moisture-Wicking Apparel: Quick-drying clothes are perfect to combat the humidity and afternoon showers.
Waterproof Bags: Protect your gadgets and documents from water damage. You can also have a couple large sealed zip-loc bag that can be packed inside a backpack for extra protection.
Wet Season (September-November)
In addition to the recommendations for the Green Season, a Light Layer can be helpful.: Nights and rainy weather can make some people feel cooler, consider including a light jacket or light long sleeve shirt
Helpful Items to bring along!
Power Adapter: Costa Rica uses 110V, standard American plug. Ensure your electronics are compatible if you are coming from another region.
Personalized First Aid Kit: Include an antibiotic ointment, a few band-aids, your favorite tummy pills and any personal prescriptions.
Reusable Shopping Bag: Something that packs light and flat can be handy for market visits and reduces plastic use.
A packable backpack: We love traveling with one of these. They pack super small - you can find them on Amazon. They are great for any extra souvenirs you want to take home but are super useful as a beach bag or for long tidal pool excursions.
Mask and Snorkel: While this tip is heavily dependent on room, it can be nice to have your own mask and snorkel for spontaneous peeks beneath the waters around Samara. If you take a snorkeling tour, a mask, snorkel and fins will be provided as part of the tour.
A few Extra Tips...
Cash is helpful: While many places accept cards, having local currency (Colones) can save you for street food purchases or other places that don’t take credit cards. We have a bank within a few minutes walk where you can get cash out. Make sure to check your bank’s fees for international ATM withdrawals.
Language Basics: Learn a few Spanish phrases before arriving. You can also check out our partner website, AmigoLingo.com for some free tips and resources - or, sign up on the website for a few virtual lessons before arriving. Even knowing a little Spanish can enhance your interaction with locals and enrich your experience
